Later, I received a similar feedback cum request from Abhinav who heads one of the most favorite and popular design communities, 10kdesigners. He was looking for a platform where they could onboard all of their alumni and showcase all their verified students, alumni, mentors, and their core team all in one place.

We were anticipating that company profiles need to be flexible enough to accommodate such needs of Schools and communities. After receiving this feedback, our hypothesis got validated.

We never shied away from the fact that Peerlist started because we faced a problem with LinkedIn. We identified the need for a Professional Network focused completely on Tech and Startups.

We decided to solve these problems we were facing with the existing professional networking! Let’s understand the depth of this problem better!

Proof of Work, Traditional Degrees, and Credibility

In recent years, we all have experienced the shift from traditional degrees to more outcome-oriented work! Unless you can get the work done, your relevant degrees have much less importance than they used to be.

Though this is a debatable topic, having a degree cannot always confirm a person’s expertise in a certain field. Hence you can’t guarantee the execution and results. But on the other hand, having your Proof of Work gives you some level of confidence that the person knows their craft and can deliver the solution!

The credibility of these skills is extremely important when we have so much noise around us and everyone has to move faster!

Content or Noise?

The creator economy is thriving and so does the content. But at times, we are so overloaded with the content that we start missing the thin lines between content and noise!

But, what separates content from noise? Context!

🛟 How to create a Peerlist company profile?

On a personal level, I want to ask Elon to take a 4-weeks vacation and give all the users a bit of space to take a breath from the chaos called Twitter.

Twitter was a platform where people used to document their thoughts, opinions, and knowledge. As a bonus, they got some people who would vibe with them and have fun - it was an escape from daily life for most.

Things changed when the “creator economy” took over. A good chunk of the platform was filled with the “information” that might not help many but seems like “helpful” - even then it was bearable.

Yes, users were feeding algorithms, but a few percentages of the algorithm also liked raw, unhinged tweets which made Twitter bearable for most.

We all were only accepting that new change when on a random day, Elon decided to make “Twitter” his fun side-project. If you want to learn, what you should NOT do to your side-project, then learn everything Elon is doing.

Now, with the blue tick, affiliate badge, etc., and the algorithm filled with all kinds of bugs - every user gets a new guidebook for using Twitter every time Elon tweets something.

Making Twitter's algorithm open-source was another stunt!

While having a conversation with a friend, she mentioned "how making Twitter chaos" might be a similar stunt to the one he pulled in the demo of the Tesla Cybertruck!

It was a marketing stunt and most understood later but when it was happening, it looked too real.

Anyway, blue tick exists for years and it didn’t bother anyone this much. However, making it a monetization model is a decision that doesn’t make sense to most.

Verification tick or blue tick used to be a symbol used on social media platforms to indicate that a particular account is authentic and belongs to a public figure, celebrity, or brand.

It means finding an official account of Emma Stone from the 100s of fake/fan accounts was easier.

However, this changed when Elon pushed out a new feature called Twitter Blue. You get a blue tick for $8/month.

Before, we get too much into the why, what, and how of Twitter Blue, let’s understand how these ticks came into the picture.

A short history of blue ticks -

Facebook was the first platform that launched its verification system in 2008. Twitter followed and launched its verification in 2009.

Facebook's verification system was designed to verify the accounts of high-profile public figures, such as celebrities and politicians, and was called "Facebook Verified Pages".

The verification badge on Facebook was initially a red checkmark, which was later replaced by a blue badge in 2015 to match the color scheme of Facebook's website.

Whereas Twitter’s verification was initially only available to a select group of high-profile individuals, such as politicians, celebrities, and athletes. In 2016, Twitter opened up the verification process to all users, allowing them to apply for verification by providing personal information and supporting documents.

Other social media platforms, such as Instagram, and TikTok, have also implemented their verification programs in which accounts are authenticated and given a verification badge or tick to indicate their authenticity.

Getting verified on social media used to be a celebratory moment, but not anymore!

Why verification badge at all?

The purpose of the verification tick was to help users identify authentic accounts and reduce the risk of impersonation, misinformation, and online fraud. It also provides a level of credibility to public figures, brands, and organizations on social media.

Twitter, no more, aligns with this purpose.

However, keeping the credibility over popularity, we at Peerlist provide a green tick. Here when we say, green tick, we don’t differentiate between public figures, personal branding, etc. We simply want you to verify your professional and educational background, and get a verified badge.

We want to showcase that whatever organization you have mentioned on your profile has been verified and anyone connecting with you, be it a recruiter, investor, or a peer from the community, know it.

When a peer connects with you, you can build connections and not worry about scams/frauds, etc.

The essential part is all these are still free and based upon “if the profile matches the criteria” except Twitter.

And it leads us to our next question.

What is the impact of selling blue verification ticks on the credibility and effectiveness of the verification system?

In November last year, when Twitter launched its new policies of verification badges, a lot of fake accounts paid for it and exposed the reality of the badge, they did get banned afterward. However, it was enough to show the real picture.

The verification tick is intended to provide a way for users to identify authentic and verified pages of public figures, celebrities, and brands. Selling verification ticks open up the possibility for fake pages and accounts to be verified, which would ultimately harm the authenticity and trustworthiness of the system - which has already happened multiple times.

Selling verification ticks also create an unfair advantage for those who can afford to pay for them, as opposed to those who genuinely meet the criteria for verification. It undermines the merit-based nature of the verification system and would be unfair to those who have worked hard to build their public profile or brand.

In conclusion, paid blue verification tick does dilute the purpose of the verification system and undermines its credibility.

In 2003, Ryan Carson, the founder of Treehouse, was working on a web design project and needed a way to share large files with his clients. He created DropSend, a simple file transfer service that allowed users to send large files without filling up their email inboxes.

Despite its potential, Carson didn't actively promote DropSend and it remained a side project for several years. In the meantime, other file transfer services like Dropbox and WeTransfer gained popularity and became dominant players in the market.

It wasn't until 2014, when Carson sold his web design training company, Treehouse, that he decided to devote more time to DropSend. However, he was late to the market.

This shows the importance of promoting and showcasing a side project at the right time to ensure that it gains the attention and recognition it deserves.

Here is the guideline that you can follow to fill in the details of the project!

Project Name -

The name should be something that can describe precisely what a project is. It should be catchy and easy to remember.

For example - Scattr is a cross-posting tool. The name of the project makes sense when you look at the objective of the tool.  

Tagline -

It should be objective oriented.

For example - the tagline of Algochurn is - "Ace your next technical front-end interview round with ease" which gives the clear WHY of the project!

Cover Image -

The cover image can be a logo or a preview of the project. For example - the cover image of SignLanguage shows what it does.

This will help your project stand out and make it more recognizable.

Project Link -

We would recommend you not skip this step. You can choose one of these -

• Enter the URL of your project's website in the field.

• If your project is open-source, you can provide a link to the project's GitHub repository.

• You can add your case studies' link too!

• If you are a designer, post the link of your Figma file or Behance, etc.

• Add any link which can show users some demos.

Adding a project link is a must for getting the deserved appreciation and feedback.

Project Tags -

Enter any relevant tags for your project. Tags can be used to connect with peers from the same community or with the users of the project!

It will help other users find your project based on specific keywords.

For example, you can add the stack you have used to build it like Javascript, ReactJs, etc, or the targeted audience like Product designers, Engineers, etc.

Collaborators -

Mention all the collaborators, and if any of them are not on Peerlist, then send them an invite and mention them in the “About the Project” section.

About the Project -

Enter a brief description of your project. This can include -

• An overview of your project.

• Include what it aims to achieve.

• How does it work?

• How to use the project efficiently to get better results?

• How you searched and came up with this idea?

• The challenges you faced while building this.

• Who helped you and what articles/tutorials you followed?

• Your learnings.

• Your plans regarding the project.

• You can keep updating the progress of the project as well.

Get the feedback, implement it, and showcase it!

When you are showcasing a project, explaining why behind every step becomes an essential element, you often get asked, “why did you decide to go with x and not y?”

That’s where the case study enters! Let’s understand what a case study is.

What is a case study?

Generally, a case study is research that involves a detailed analysis of a specific situation or problem. An example could be a business case study that might analyze how a company successfully launched a new product. Through these cases, people can gain insights into what works and what doesn't, and use this knowledge in the future.

Now, if you are a developer and want to write a case study, keep reading to understand how you should proceed.

Case Study: As a developer

As a developer, you proceed a bit differently, you might be writing the case study to explain why you are implementing a feature, or why you migrated from one technology to another, etc.

Follow the mentioned format to decrease friction while writing a case study.

Choose the project -

Identify a project or situation that demonstrates your technical skills and expertise. It could be an individual or team project.

Outline the problem -

Clearly state the problem that needed to be addressed and provide context about the project. Explain why the project was significant and what the objectives were.

Explain your approach -

Describe the strategy you chose to address the problem, including the tools and technologies used. Explain the reasoning behind selecting that approach and the benefits it provided.

It should be in the following order -

• Showing how to select/pick up the right stack/technologies.

• Explaining why that particular stack will be useful.

Detail your process -

Provide a step-by-step description of how you handled the problem, including any challenges encountered and how they were overcome. Provide examples of your decision-making process and how you evaluated alternative solutions.

It should be in the following order -

• Explain the code. Show the steps.

• Explain the issues with the code.

• Mention the examples and explain them.

• How did you overcome those?

• What platforms did you decide on for deployments?

• How to select the right platform to deploy?

Discuss the outcome -

Explain the results of your work and how they aligned with the project's objectives. Provide any relevant metrics or data to support your claims. Showcase the positive impact your work had on the project or organization.

Future preferences -

Mention how you can improve it in the future and how you would proceed if you have to do it again.

Conclusion -

Summarize the project, give the final insights, and close the case study with lessons learned. Don’t forget to mention how your work can be leveraged in other contexts and mention the advantages it can provide.

Bonus -

• Write about your bias and why/how you would have done things differently if you started with a different mindset.

• Avoid jargon. Technical details are essential but remember to frame the case study in a way that is easily readable for non-technical members too.

• Include visuals to explain concepts!

Let’s say you are writing the case study to explain why you implemented a particular feature, then include the below-mentioned. Customize it according to your needs.

Feature description -

Describe the feature you implemented in detail, including how it works and how it was implemented. This should include technical details that are relevant to the feature.

Implementation approach -

Explain the approach you took to implement the feature. This should include any technologies or tools you used and how you integrated the feature with the existing system.

Nothing is less or more important when you are creating a beautiful website; every small detail needs attention.

However, a few essential parts of the creation get overlooked, for example - the fonts or typeface.

Have you noticed how little or no attention you give to typeface or fonts when you check the website for the first time? As a developer, your objective will be to observe how fast and easily accessible it is. As a user, you will automatically be impressed by how fast it is, how easy it is to use, how beautiful it looks, etc., but not directly with the fonts.

Ideally, that’s how it should be. Fonts or typefaces are meant to be overlooked. The main function of any text that is present on the website is to be read. The fonts or typeface make it less or more readable, but the ideal one makes it a less important element to notice.

But when you are the creator of the website, it becomes extremely difficult to select the fonts that are set right with the brand voice, objective, and how users use your website.

Before jumping into any more discussion, let’s first understand the difference between fonts and typeface.

Fonts Vs Typeface

A lot of us use fonts and typefaces as interchangeable terms which is technically not right.

This primarily happened because of Steve Jobs. He decided to call typeface “fonts” when his team decided to introduce typography on the computer.

As a designer or an aspiring one, this difference is one of the things that you learn in the early days but if you are not, then it becomes a mystery for you.

Let me give you a simple example that will clear all the doubts - “Lora” is a typeface whereas “Lora Semi Bold 12px” is a font.

I hope this clears up what exactly is typeface and what is font. If not, then go to Google Docs, and hover over the font section, the main list is a typeface and the sub-options of the main list are fonts.

Now you know the difference, let’s move to understand the basics of typefaces and fonts.

Basics of typefaces and fonts

To browse fonts effectively, you should be familiar with basic terminology. This is what we will learn in this section.

We will talk about the main 5 categories -

Serif fonts -

These fonts have small lines or strokes at the ends of letters and are used in printed materials such as books, newspapers, and magazines. Serif fonts are old-looking ones, more traditional and formal in style.

These help people read long texts by making it easier to tell similar letters apart, and they also help guide the reader's eyes from one word to the next.

Sans-serif fonts -

These fonts are the exact opposite of serif fonts. They use simple geometric lines to create letters. The font is sleek and contemporary, fitting in with the rest of the design without sacrificing readability.

These are used in digital media, such as websites and mobile applications.

Display fonts -

These types of fonts are created to be used in bigger sizes, for things like titles, headlines, and logos. They usually have their special look and can help create a certain tone or identity for a brand or project.

Script fonts -

Some fonts are not meant to be readable, and that’s what script fonts represent. These fonts copy the look of someone's handwriting or artistic writing. These are commonly used for fancy events like formal invitations or in other sophisticated designs.

Monospaced fonts -

These types of fonts have the same width for every letter and are commonly used in computer programming, as they help to arrange code and text more easily.

While selecting the fonts, you should know the basic terminology to categorize them. Now, you can easily understand which font you can use according to your use case.

Let’s understand the factors you should consider while selecting the fonts.

Factors to keep in mind

Improve the user experience

The objective is to make the user experience more enjoyable. Reading should not feel like work. The ideal font should be -

• Legible: Each letter of the alphabet has a specific structure and shape that distinguishes it from the rest of the alphabet.

Tip - Do the Il1 test, “I” capital of “i”, “l” lowercase of “L”, and 1 look similar for some fonts. The selected font should be able to differentiate between them.

• Readable: While selecting the best font for your project, think about letter spacing, line height, text size, and text color. A general rule of thumb is that your font size shouldn’t be less than 12px.

Tip - See if you want to descend the numbers or not; some fonts descend the numbers, which affects the readability of the text if your text is full of numbers.

• Versatile: The selected font should be easily readable on every screen. Test how your selected fonts look when view put them in bold, italic, and regular, and how it affects the readability and legibility when changing the size.

• Appropriate: Imagine using “comic sans” for a funeral invite and “times new roman" for a Halloween party invite. Yes, it won't look appropriate. Before selecting, think about the image and value you want to communicate.

Communicate your brand identity

What kind of feeling you want to create matters here. How do you want to position your brand? Comfortable? Reliable? Traditional? Modern? Minimalistic? Strong and stable? Elegant or beautiful?

Select your positioning, and that’s how you will be able to select the right fonts and eliminate the rest.

Create the right emotions

What kind of emotions do you want to convey? Simple fonts are easily readable and make the experience better. On the other hand, fancy fonts represent superiority and are associated with high quality.

Understand what your objective is. If you want the visitor to complete a certain task, then the simple font is the best choice.

Load in every browser

Here comes the font fallback part; sometimes your font doesn’t get rendered on the user browser, and that’s when it’s recommended to use a regular font which is stored on every device as a fall-back font.

How much text do you use?

That tells if it should be sans, sans-serif, display, etc. If it’s a long text, sans-serif looks decent. If your primary target is shorter text, aesthetics should guide your choice.

How do users use your website?

If a user is going to spend hours on the website, then your primary selection should be dependent on the ease of use.

Remember to consider the user’s perspective before selecting the font.

At the end of the day, the selection of fonts will get easier with time and practice. Making side projects don’t only help in building a portfolio but also in getting better at these essential tasks that are mostly overlooked.

Before jumping to find the AI tools that can save you time, let's understand how AI got the hype.

AI tools came into the light because of excessive hype around chatGPT.

Most people started using chatGPT to experiment with how correct it is. After a while, it became a trend on the internet, and then a keyword for engagement.

Then one by one, there were various tools that come into the picture. And it started to look like AI tools have taken over the market. Even at one point, everyone was talking about how they could eliminate jobs. But with time, we understood that even though AI tools are powerful, they are useless if a user doesn't know how to use them effectively.

Fast forward to today, from coders to travelers, everyone is taking advantage of one or another AI tool.

We have understood one thing they are not going to replace humans anytime soon. The main idea around these tools is to make the machine do the labor work, so that, we, humans can sit back and have ideas.

A lot of businesses have started incorporating each of the below-mentioned into everything.

Writing includes research, outlining, the goal of the particular piece, and finally, editing.

Every day, we are seeing tons of AI tools that can change the way you write, market, and code your product.

If you look for tools for a particular step, you will find plenty of them.

However, most of these are text generators but have a bit different features and approaches.

How to use AI tools effectively?

You can find tools for almost every step of your project. The steps to be efficient are -

• Understand the goal of the project before using the tool.

• Research what AI tools will come in handy for your project.  

• Select the relevant tool. For example, there are multiple tools for writing, but ask yourself what part you need help with and proceed accordingly.

• The final step is to give a clear prompt. Once you learn how to make AI give you the result you want, you will save plenty of time to refine it.

Don't forget that AI is here to help you get started, but you should not rely on this. Add your touch, have fun with your side project, and keep learning!

As founders of Peerlist, Yogini and I understand the importance of finding talented and motivated individuals to join our team and help us drive our company forward. However, despite the many benefits that internships can bring to a startup, we have chosen not to hire interns at Peerlist at this time.

Let me explain why we have made this decision and what factors we considered when deciding whether or not to bring on interns.

Resource crunch

This is the most important reason! As a small and growing startup, we simply don't have the resources to effectively manage, support, and mentor you. In addition, we are a small team of five people, and we need to focus all our energy and attention on our core business initiatives and product development.

Time crunch

Running a startup is a demanding and time-consuming process, and the demands on us as founders and early team members are particularly intense. This can make it challenging to allocate the necessary time and resources to train and manage you effectively.

Lack of structure and processes.

Right now, we do not have formal processes and structures in place. Still, we have strong opinions on how we must function, making it challenging for you to understand your role and responsibilities and make the most of your internship experience. This can lead to confusion and frustration for both of us and may result in an unproductive internship experience. We don't want that!

Focus on product development.

We're highly focused on product development and shipping things faster, leaving no time and resources for developing internship programs and managing interns. This makes it challenging to ensure that you are effectively integrated into the team and make meaningful contributions to product development.

Offering an internship may present certain difficulties at the moment; however, that doesn't mean we are ruling out the possibility altogether. We understand that as an intern, you have the potential to bring a new burst of energy, unique perspectives, and valuable abilities, and you may be highly motivated to work diligently and make a meaningful impact. To ensure the success of the internship program, we must provide adequate resources, organization, and support, thereby making your internship experience both productive and valuable.

By being proactive and intentional in designing and implementing our internship program, we can ensure that you can make meaningful contributions to Peerlist's growth and development. But we're not there yet.
